Nurse leaders, especially in clinical settings, set the tone and influence others when it comes to communication. It is difficult to separate leadership from communication; leadership styles and communication styles are strongly linked. The capacity to be an effective listener is crucial to good communication and does not come naturally to all leaders.  Poor communication has a negative impact on team performance but even more importantly on patient safety.
