Conflict occurs when there is a disagreement between persons who have opposing needs, ideas, or goals.  Conflict can occur between individuals or between groups.  In this section, you will learn about the stages of conflict, as well as the destructive and constructive outcomes of conflict.

Slides: Conflict as a Complex Process

Activity #2

Consider alternative words which are synonymous with the word ‘conflict’.  Are they all negative in context?

Activity #3

Think about a past personal conflict situation which occurred at work.  Identify the stages within the conflict and write them down.  Often, we only focus on the end of the conflict, yet this exercise may help you recognize the stages prior to its occurrence.  Also focus on the feelings you had through the stages.  Was this a constructive or destructive conflict outcome?
