Video: Academic Advisors
Hi there. My name is Samantha Diamond and I’m one of the academic advisors in the Lawrence Kinlin School of Business. This video is going to tell you the many ways academic advisors can help you in your journey here at Fanshawe.
Academic advisors can help you by providing information, referring to resources, intervening, advocating and advising. Your academic advisor is a good place to start if you have a question or concern. If we don’t know the answer, we will find out or refer you to staff who can help you. We can connect with you by phone, email, zoom, or in person.
Feel free to reach out to ask questions about your program, college policies and procedures, important events, and deadlines and services. If you need support but you aren’t sure where to look, we can connect you with wonderful services to help you, such as the Library Learning Commons, the International Center, Counselling Accessibility Services, Fanshawe Student Union, and other useful resources.
We can advise you if you need assistance with your program progression. For example, if you have failed courses and need to have a custom plan, we can advise you about which courses are available. If you need to withdraw from a course or add an extra course, we can help you. Along with program coordinators, we can provide information about program pathways and switching programs.
Also, we can help you calculate the grades that you need to achieve to reach your GPA goal. Did you know you need a 2.0 GPA to graduate? Even though you could pass your courses with Ds, you will not be able to graduate unless your GPA is 2.0 or greater. We can discuss your future goals and any concerns you might have.
If you need help, we can advocate for you to your professors, program coordinator, and other college staff. We intervene to help provide you support when you are struggling. For example, times we may intervene would be when your attendance is low, your professor is concerned about your performance, your midterm grades are unsatisfactory, you aren’t in good standing at the end of the term, or you ask for assistance.
This timeline shows the important academic dates in a term at Fanshawe. We support you throughout this journey, and we encourage you to reach out at any point if you have questions or concerns. We are happy to help. You can find a more detailed list of important dates at Fanshawe’s academic calendar page.
To reach your academic advisor, you can find their contact information on the program homepage. Alternatively, you can go to Fanshawe’s Academic Advisor web page and search for your advisor. You can see there are many advisors in the Lawrence Kinlin School of Business, and the programs they support are listed under their names.
We wish you all the best in your journey here at Fanshawe and encourage you to reach out to us any time you need help.
