1.1.5 How Your Immune System Fights Pathogens

Not all germs cause disease. When microbes cause disease, they are called pathogens. The immune system actually acts as the second line of defense for the body against pathogens. The first line of defense is innate immunity—the barriers between the body and the outside world such as the skin and mucous membranes. To learn about how our body protects us against germs, we need to learn about the immune system.
