3.1.6 Prevalent Diseases and Illnesses

Certain diseases and illnesses are extremely common, and so it is important that you take the time to become familiar with their causes and symptoms so that you can better support your clients. On this page, you will explore resources that provide basic information about each health concern. Then, check your understanding by completing the quiz provided at the end of the page.

Diabetes Mellitus

According to the Mayo Clinic (2020), “diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar (glucose).” Review the information found at the following links and then answer the questions below.

High blood pressure

The Mayo Clinic (2021) defines high blood pressure (hypertension) as “a common condition in which the long-term force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease.” Review the information found at the following links and then answer the questions below.

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

According to the Mayo Clinic (2020b), congestive heart failure “occurs when your heart muscle doesn’t pump blood as well as it should.” Review the information found at the following links and then answer the questions below.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can cause abnormally high pressure in the eye and damages the optic nerve. Review the information found at the following links and then answer the questions below.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, arthritis of the joints, occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down over time. The best ways to prevent osteoarthritis are staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, and following recommended medical treatments (Mayo Clinic , 2020d). Dementia

The Mayo Clinic’s (2019) definition of dementia is “a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and social abilities severely enough to interfere with your daily life.” Review the information found at the following links and then answer the questions below.

Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement. Symptoms start gradually and worsen over time. Review the information found at the following links and then answer the questions below.
