2.3.4 The Importance of Choice

The matter of exercising your choices in life is one way of exhibiting your personhood. Choices exercised enable people to show their personality in many ways—including your clothes, your decisions in lifestyle, what you eat, where you go, and what you do. Offering choices to our clients allows them to be in control of parts of their care and helps them retain their self esteem.

The following two videos demonstrate choice and control in a care setting. Review the videos and consider ways to allow choices in our clients’ lives.

1. “Dignity in care: Choice and control,” by Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE): (12:54)
