6.3.1 Overview

In this section, we will look at some of the challenges that can arise when it comes to ensuring that clients are adequately fed. These challenges can be physical, such as hydration and malnutrition, or psychological, such as depression and boredom that interferes with enjoyment of food and meal times. All of these challenges will be addressed in this section, with ways to prevent them from happening, and treating them if they do.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Recognize symptoms and indications of challenges the client faces regarding mealtimes

Key Terms

When learning about assisting with clients’ meals, it is essential to first look at the terminology to ensure that you understand everything clearly. These terms will be used throughout this book, so it is important to take the time to master them and practice your recall often.

  • dehydration
  • malnutrition
  • emesis
  • intake
  • output

Whenever these terms are first introduced in this chapter, they are bolded. However, if you need additional information about a term than what is provided here, you can research it in The Free Dictionary: Medical Dictionary.
