4.2.5 Conclusion

In this chapter, you learned some general guidelines to assist clients with body movements safely. Be sure to refer back to these guidelines no matter what kind of movement you are assisting with. Then, you gained an introduction to the steps involved in assisting a client out of bed, as well as some common assistive devices that you may use, such as:

  • transfer belts
  • pivot discs
  • sit-to-stand units

At this point, you should be able to think back to what you have learned about body mechanics to consider why these assistive devices are to be used when helping your client. Avoiding injury and strain is paramount. See the additional resources list on the next page for more information about common injuries and how to avoid them.
