Introduction
In this module, we consider the rise of GIS in historical scholarship, often referred to as historical GIS (HGIS). To do so, we first address some of the histories of GIS, along with its debates and uptake among geographers. This module covers and raises critical questions about the legacies, layers, and implications of a spatial approach to history (Gregory and Geddes, 2014). We end with a focus on two examples of how HGIS has been used as a resource for digital storytelling approaches.
