What is SoTL?

This video features several educators defining SoTL in the context of their own professional practice.

Everybody involved in teaching has questions about the success of their practice. We deal with some of the questions informally all the time. In other cases, we seek to formalize our enquiry by doing research, and that is what SoTL is about.

Extend Activity – SoTL #1 Three Keys of SoTL

The activities in this module build off of each other. The first two steps will ask you to add brainstorming items to a shared editable Google Doc and/or enter them in the discussion forums. The remaining ones will be done in a document generated from a template where you will develop a plan for your own Scholarship of Teaching and Learning research. At the end, you will be posting them to a shared Google Drive with the ones made by previous participants.

The educators in the video we watched in the previous section express multiple experiences about SoTL. Which of the experiences are similar to your own? Identify and list three key characteristics of SoTL that resonate with your own experience and practice.
