9 What is Digital Accessibility?

Chapter Contents

This section introduces the topic of accessibility in online learning and work environments, and how remote spaces differ from in-person educational and employment contexts. This section will also define and describe the social model of disability and how this model reframes environmental barriers (physical, digital and social) as contributing primarily to the experience of disablement in accessing online and in-person spaces for persons with disabilities and/or functional limitations.

Additionally and concisely, this section articulates WCAG 2.0 AA web accessibility requirements for public-facing websites and web content, which came into place and apply to all Universities and Colleges in Ontario as of January 1, 2021.
