1 Chapter 1 – Audio Script

When do I use small talk?

I use small talk when I talk with people I don’t know well. For example, I use small talk with my neighbours. I like to talk about the weather. I also ask them questions about their family or their job. People always like to talk about their children and their pets so those are good ways to start a conversation. My neighbour really likes to take care of her garden, so I ask questions about the flowers and plants too.

I also use small talk when I meet new students at the beginning of the semester. It helps me to learn important information about them. I can learn what I have in common with my students and I can find out about their hobbies and interests. This helps me plan my lessons and connect with the students, so they feel comfortable during my lessons.

Small talk can build relationships. It can also help people feel comfortable in new situations.
