11 H5P: Adding Metadata and Copyright Information

- Add appropriate metadata and licensing information to your H5P interactive.
Importance of Metadata
The metadata on H5Ps allows you to identify yourself as the author of the work, include attribution information if you have reused or adapted content from another source, and tell others the conditions under which they may reuse your H5P interactive. Metadata also helps the H5P Studio index and sort your content so others can discover it.
You can add your metadata to an H5P by clicking on the metadata button next to the H5P Title field.
The key pieces of metadata are the license and the author or editor name. When creating H5Ps in Pressbooks, adding the permalink from the book in the source field will help future users trace it back to the original creator.
If you’ve added external media items (video, images), you must add sourcing and copyright details for those items as well.
Always Set a License
If you do not select a license for your H5P, it automatically defaults to All Rights Reserved copyrighted content—even if you intend to make it available for others to use and adapt. They technically cannot do so if no license is specified. Open Learning recommends CC BY-NC-SA, but the choice is always yours.
Pro Tip
DO NOT CHOOSE THIS LICENSE!
In the H5P studio, there is a tab on the left-hand side of the interface titled “License.” This section is specifically intended for the “Ontario License.” This license was created as part of the Virtual Learning Strategies program and restricts open usage to people in Ontario. This license should only be used on material that was funded via the VLS program. Please ensure the dropdown in this tab is set to “None” when creating H5Ps in the studio.
