Course 3: the Magic of Physics

PHY100 is a concept-based introductory physics course for students who are NOT in science or engineering majors. Consequently, the labs designed for PHY100 have lower requirements on quantitative analysis while focusing mainly on the concepts and phenomena.

To complete the five experiments in this course, a lab kit can be assembled with the following items from local educational stores:

  • Diffraction grating with 300~500 lines per millimeter.
  • Some food coloring (any color, any quantity)
  • A prism that is at least 2 centimeters in height

In addition to the items in the kit, a student will also need the following items that are not included in the kit:

  • A container with a flat bottom (for holding water)
  • Hot water
  • A large piece of cardboard
  • A knife to cut a slit in the cardboard
