Symptom Reports

In order to learn more about the symptoms and challenges experienced by individuals who have experienced osseointegration surgery, we reviewed postings on the Osseointegration Peer Support Group Facebook site. The information was compiled in tables by symptom, and symptoms were grouped where this made sense. Postings included in this summary range from the earliest postings on the site in 2014 up until May of 2022.

Where possible, the sex/gender of the persons reporting the symptoms, the location and level of amputation, and the time after OI that the symptoms were experienced are reported. These are shown in “tables” in each section. The following acronyms are used in each section: AK – above knee; BK – below knee; NS – not specified.

We have reported the median rather than the mean (average) times since surgery, as the timing of symptoms is not normally distributed; more respondents posted reports of symptoms within the first months post OI.  In addition, charts are inserted to give a better picture of the time since surgery, in weeks, that the symptoms were reported.

The following groups of symptoms were found. These categories summarized the Facebook discussion.
