Apply for an OER Grant

Apply for funded time to develop an open educational resource for your course with support of the OER Design Studio.
The Fanshawe Open Education Grant Program provides funding and support to faculty interested in adapting or creating Open Educational Resources (OER). OER are “teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under a license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others” (Hewlett Foundation).

OER can include various resources, such as textbooks, videos, lab manuals, instructor resources, interactive objects, and slide decks. This program supports using OER to benefit teaching and learning by enhancing equal access to learning resources, reducing student costs, and promoting flexibility in teaching.

The OER grant process is open to currently employed faculty (part-time, partial-load, and full-time) with an idea to develop open resources to be used in a Fanshawe College course with the support of their academic manager.

Applications for the Winter 2024 semester are now open!
Applications will be received until September 30, 2024

Process

To start the process, please follow the steps listed below.

  1. Step 1: Complete the Fanshawe OER Scan Request Form to have an environmental scan prepared of current open resources that will meet your course needs.
  2. Step 2: Review the results of the environmental scan to determine suitability.
    • If an open resource exists that meets your course needs, you can adopt it. Review the Adopt OER page for more guidance.
    • If no open resources meet your needs, you can apply for a grant to develop either a customized resource based on some existing open content or create a brand-new resource. Proceed to step 3 below.
  1. Step 3: Complete the online application form to apply for a grant. This form utilizes Microsoft Power Automate, meaning the form will be immediately sent to your Academic Manager for approval. Please speak with your manager before submitting the application form.

NOTE: Please use this Microsoft Word version if you prefer to work on your application in draft before submitting it to the online form.

You will be asked to submit a Development Plan with your application.

If you need assistance, please get in touch with the OER Design Studio at oer@fanshawec.ca. The Development plan is an aid to map out your new resource’s overall structure.

Criteria

The following criteria will be considered during the evaluation process:

  • Feasibility of timeline and project objectives, including a plan for sustainability (updates etc.)
  • Impact on students: number of students and cost savings, availability for underserved or diverse groups, and potential for OER reuse
  • Plan for measuring learners’ experience with the OER and project success
  • Subject or disciplinary area (not already served by an existing OER)

Grant Success

Successful applicants will be notified by email. Recipients will be asked to attend the project’s kick-off training and regular check-in meetings. Recipients may also be invited to participate in events related to open education to help promote the use of OER at Fanshawe.

Congratulations to the following grant recipients.
