Case Overview

Juliet Stonic manages a small team focused on Major Gifts within the Monroe Health Science Foundation, the fundraising branch for the Monroe Health Sciences Centre. The foundation has many departments whose responsibilities/jurisdiction often overlap. Stonic is struggling to manage interpersonal relationships with two of the managers in the other departments.

Learning Objectives

By working through this case, students should be able to

  1. Apply McClelland’s Need Theory to analyze the structural reasons for miscommunication in large healthcare fundraising organizations.
  2. Analyze leadership styles, communication skills and motivation in large healthcare fundraising organizations.
  3. Develop a recommendation with justification to address miscommunication challenges causing workplace friction and misunderstandings in large healthcare fundraising organizations. Include a high-level action plan to implement the recommended solution.

Course Suitability

This case is primarily targeted at those in the organizational behaviour, human resources and leadership disciplines. The case is intended for undergraduate students.
