MODULE 1

the word toxicants with molecular structures around it

Overview:

MODULE 1 covers opiates, opioids, cannabis, pharmaceuticals, alcohol, volatile organic compounds, and heavy metals. The structures, properties and metabolism of each toxicant form 7 separate chapters with cases. included. The cases discussed are from news articles, the CanLII database, and literature articles. Participants will be exposed to case histories, evidence, testing, interpretation and testifying, when possible. Each chapter includes an interactive presentation and a podcast episode. With this module, the learning outcomes focus on a deeper understanding of toxicants and their relevance in investigations.

Learning Goals:

Upon completion of this module, you should be able to:

  • Differentiate various classes of toxicants based on their structures and properties
  • Identify metabolic patterns for each toxicant class
  • Predict toxicant metabolites in various biological fluids and compartments
  • Define key parameters in data interpretation as related to a case and testifying
