Scams

Job scams are a common problem for international students in Canada. Scammers often target international students because they may be unfamiliar with the Canadian job market and may be more likely to be desperate for work.

Scams are often sent through student email so please be aware!

Here are some key points to watch out for when looking for a job in Ontario:

  • The job offer is too good to be true. If the job offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers often offer high-paying jobs with little or no experience required.
  • The employer asks for money upfront. Legitimate employers will never ask for money upfront. If an employer asks for money to cover things like training fees or application, it is a scam.
  • The employer is not willing to meet in person. Legitimate employers will always be willing to meet in person to discuss the job offer. If the employer refuses to meet in person, it is a scam.
  • The job offer is through a third party. Scammers often use third parties, such as recruitment agencies, to target international students. If you are contacted by a third party about a job offer, be sure to research and ensure the agency is legitimate.

Do your research: Before applying for a job, be sure to research and ensure the company is legitimate. You can check the company’s website, look for reviews online, and contact the company directly to ask questions.
