Physics in Action

Use the following activity to think about how physics relate to real life examples.

PhET simulation “Forces and Motion”

Play around with this simulation to reinforce concepts of Newton’s Laws and forces in mechanics.

To Do

  1. Go to Net Force

Place different people on both sides of the cart.

  1. Observe forces and define the net force based on your observation.
  2. How is the motion of the object related to the net force?
  3. Go to Motion

On the right top corner check boxes for Force, Value, and Speed.

Change applier force to about 100N.

  1. What happened with the box?
  2. How is the speed of the box changing?
  3. Does it change with time? Why?
  4. Got to Friction

In the right top corner check boxes for Sum of Forces, Value, and Speed.

  1. Change the applied force to about 55N.
  2. Observe what happened with Applied Force, Force of Friction, and Sum of Forces.
  3. What type of friction is present at the moment?
  4. Is the box moving?
  5. Change the applied force to about 120N.
  6. Observe the values of Sum of Forces, Friction Force and Applied Force.
  7. What is happening with the box?
  8. What type of friction is present now?

21st Century Skills

Practicing Your Teamwork Skills

The empirical evidence from high-risk work environments tells us that collaboration and teamwork is a way to produce high-quality results (Clements et al, 2007).

Task:

  1. Read the article by Clements et al. (2007).
  2. Notice the benefits of effective teamwork.
  3. Explore the elements of a healthy workplace.

Just for Fun

Why was Newton surprised when he was hit by an apple?
He was sitting under a pear tree!
