Goals for Introductory Fieldwork Placement (Second Semester Students)

Goals for the Introductory Fieldwork experience include:

  •  To experience the role of the OTA&PTA in the particular setting(s) and observe/experience the working relationship between the OT/PT and the OTA&PTA.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of team member roles, the focus of the practice area and the specific needs and considerations of the target population
  •  To practice, as appropriate, transfers and client positioning and handling while emphasizing the safety and comfort of both the client and care provider. These can include:
    • bed positioning/re-positioning, bed mobility
    •  active assistive & passive range of motion
    •  lie to sit and sit to lie transitional movements
    •  sit to stand and stand to sit transitional movements
    •  low pivot and standing pivot transfers (requiring minimum or moderate assistance)
    •  sliding board transfers (requiring minimum or moderate assistance)
    •  use of mechanical lifts/devices
    •  teaching exercises (active, assistive and resistive)
  • The student will demonstrate appropriate use of precautions related to safety and infection control during transfers and client-handling.
  •  To practice a range of skills which establish the foundation for effective client care:
    •  Demonstrate techniques for establishing rapport with clients.
    •  Set-up the treatment environment in preparation for the treatment session.
    •  Demonstrate the ability to communicate the role of the OTA&PTA and scope of practice to team members, clients and peers.
    •  Demonstrate professional behaviors (reliability, appearance, time management, accountability, acceptance of constructive criticism, etc).
    • Demonstrate ethical practice by respecting issues of confidentiality and consent.
