Introduction to Occupational and Physiotherapy

This introductory course will prepare the student for the role of rehabilitation assistant through the examination of both Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. Students will be challenged to examine their ethical beliefs and how they apply to a professional practice of helping others. Examination of the scope of practice of the OTA/PTA will be enhanced by the introduction of self-assessment through reflection.

Anatomy and Physiology

This course will develop knowledge in the human body systems. Students will learn how the body works through the examination of all body systems. Emphasis will be placed on those areas of the body that are most affected in rehabilitation situations such as Musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, neurological and endocrine.

The Health Care System

This course focuses on the evolution of the Canadian Health Care System including its federal and provincial origins. It will examine determinants of health status, special interest groups and a comparison of the Canadian system to various other models. Students will become familiar with the organization of the Canadian health care system and the roles and the interrelationships of the health professions.

Normal Function and Movement

This course will provide the student with an in-depth understanding of normal posture, gait and movement of the human body. Students will become familiar with describing the human body in motion, based on theoretical and practical study of functional movement.

Issues in Healthy Aging

This course defines aging across the lifespan and the Canadian population according to current and forecast age distributions. Implications on the dependency, economic and social status of our diverse population will be examined. Health status and influencing factors are reviewed with a concurrent look at health care including the role of rehabilitation.
