Goals for Intermediate Fieldwork Placements (Third Semester Students)
Goals for the Intermediate fieldwork experiences include:
- Experience the role of the OTA&PTA in the particular setting(s)
- Experience the working relationship between
- the OT &/or PT and the OTA&PTA.
- the OTA&PTA and other members of the team.
- Paticipate in
- the application of therapeutic techniques under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor, the therapist or staff OTA&PTA
- the selection of treatment activities based on the client’s treatment plan and goals.
- Practice under the supervision of the therapist or staff OTA&PTA:
- the delivery of treatment activities to clients (as appropriate).
- appropriate strategies for the modifying or grading treatment activities designed to meet the client’s evolving performance capabilities under the supervision of the Clinical Supervisor
- apply therapeutic skills during the supervised treatment of a client.
- Demonstrate
- professional behaviors and accountability
- safe client-handling techniques, utilizing appropriate precautions related to safety and infection control.
- techniques for establishing rapport with colleagues and clients.
- appropriate use of equipment, assistive devices and treatment tools.
- effective verbal reporting and written and electronic documentation skills.
- ethical practice by respecting guidelines related to confidentiality and obtaining consent.
- Function as a member of the rehabilitation team.
It is anticipated that students will primarily observe team functions for the first 2-4 days depending on the area of practice. Following this time, students are expected to gradually build a caseload of clients for which they are equally or primarily responsible to deliver treatment. All treatment activities are to be carried out under the supervision and direction of the Clinical Supervisor.
Student’s caseload is determined at the discretion of the Clinical Supervisor. It is anticipated that students at this level carry a minimum of 30 – 40% of a full caseload by the end of their Intermediate placement
