Goals for Internship 1 & Internship 2 Fieldwork Placements (Fourth Semester Students)
Goals for the Internship 1 and Internship 2 fieldwork experiences include:
- Function as a member of the rehabilitation team, experiencing the role of the OTA&PTA and the working relationship with the OT/PT
- Demonstrate understanding of the roles and a working relationship with other members of the health care team
- Identify and adhere to the professional scope as determined by the clinical setting/facility and population
- Adhere to facility regulations regarding conduct, client contact and communication/ documentation mechanisms
- Demonstrate ethical practices
- Demonstrate proficiency with:
- techniques for establishing rapport with clients/clients
- professional behaviors (reliability, appearance, time management, accountability, acceptance of constructive criticism etc)
- appropriate use of precautions related to safety and infection control
- effective written and verbal communication skills
- application of OT/PT therapeutic skills during the supervised care/treatment of a client.

- independent observation and reporting of client outcomes within all relevant performance areas to the OT/PT

- Implement treatment plans under the supervision/guidance of the Clinical Supervisor that addresses the needs and goals of the client. This includes:
- appropriate selection of treatment activities and tools
- effective grading and/or modification of therapeutic activities
- appropriate use of modalities and assistive equipment
It is anticipated that students will primarily observe team functions for the first 2-4 days depending on the area of practice. Following this time, students are expected to gradually build a caseload of clients for which they are equally or primarily responsible to deliver treatment. All treatment activities are to be carried out under the supervision and direction of the clinical supervisor.
Student’s caseload is determined at the discretion of the Clinical Supervisor. It is anticipated that students at this level carry a minimum of 50 – 70% of a full caseload by the end of their placement in Internship 1 and 80 – 90% of a full caseload by the end of Internship 2.
