Student Roles and Responsibilities
In addition to the responsibilities outlined in the Fieldwork Placement Manual, the student is also expected to review this role-emerging placement addendum and online modules prior to starting the placement. The student should research the area of practice and placement site, and if possible speak to students who have had a placement at the site previously.
Offsite Clinical Instructor Roles and Responsibilities
The offsite clinical instructor is a paid faculty position who is a registered therapist (OT’s or PT’s) and work in a clinical setting. The offsite clinical instructor is expected to provide ongoing supervision throughout the placement. This includes direct onsite visits, and offsite activities such as telephone calls and electronic communication. The offsite clinical instructor should review the Fieldwork Placement Manual. It is the responsibility of the offsite clinical instructor to identify appropriate clients for students to work with, delegate tasks to the students, monitor/evaluate student progress and sign off on any paperwork (e.g. SO(A)P notes). They are responsible for providing feedback and for complete for the midterm and final evaluation collaboratively with the on site supervisor.
Onsite Supervisor Roles and Responsibilities
The onsite supervisor should provide a tour of the facility the first day including where the student can work and eat lunch. They should review any policies and procedures for the facility and identify any onsite resources that may be beneficial. They should communicate regularly with the offsite clinical instructor and faculty member to share feedback on the student’s performance. They are responsible for providing feedback and for complete for the midterm and final evaluation collaboratively with the on site supervisor.
Onsite Student Coordinator:
The onsite student coordinator should be involved in the initial orientation of the student to the placement site. They should be available for the student to ask questions if needed on a day-to-day basis. On some sites the student coordinator may track student placement attendance.
Faculty Advisor:
The faculty support person provides support to the student, offsite clinical instructor, and onsite instructor as needed. The faculty support person will complete a site visit with the offsite supervisor during the placement period to discuss the student’s progress. The faculty advisor also reviews the placement evaluations once completed.
