Introduction

What is French?

French is one of Canada’s official languages. Alongside English and many Indigenous languages, it is spoken all over Canada. It is also the official language of some countries in the Americas, Europe and Africa.

About this Textbook

This textbook offers a brief introduction to French language, covering topics from saying hello to food, designed with the needs of post-secondary students in Canada in mind. This book is an Open Educational Resource (OER), which can be used and adapted free of charge.

About the Author

Rita M. Palacios, PhD is a language professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Conestoga College. She teaches Spanish and sometimes French, and is an advocate of Open Educational Resources. Her work includes research on Indigenous literatures and cultures from Abyiayala with a focus on Mesoamerica.
