When using open educational materials, note the type of licensing so you know how you can use them in your course. The six Creative Commons Licensing types are:
- CC BY: Requires crediting author and allows to distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon one’s work, even commercially.
- CC BY-SA: Same as CC BY, but also requires new work to be licensed as CC BY-SA.
- CC BY-ND: Requires crediting author and redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, but without changing original work.
- CC BY-NC: Requires crediting author and allows to distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon one’s work, but only for non-commercial purposes.
- CC BY-NC-SA: Same as previous one, but also requires new work to be licensed as CC BY-NC-SA.
- CC BY-NC-ND: Requires crediting author and allows for download and sharing of material if the work is not changed or used commercially.
