Introduction

Purpose:

The virtual simulation-based scenario provides undergraduate nursing students with an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge specific to ensuring the correct patient, with the correct procedure, accuracy in establishing and maintaining aseptic technique specific to wound care while adhering to the proper steps for removing staples and applying a form of wound closure. Questions will be presented for learners to answer along with opportunities to problem solve when situations present requiring further action.

To Prepare:

To prepare for this simulation on staple removal read the following references:

    • Chapter on Musculo-Skeletal System.
  • Potter, P.A., Perry, A.G., Stockert, P.A., Hall, A.M., Astle, B.J., Duggleby, W. (2019). Canadian fundamentals of nursing (6th ed.). Toronto, Elsevier Canada.
    • Chapters:
      • Skin Integrity and Wound Care; methods for cleaning a wound site, types of wound drainage, removal of staples and application of steri-strips.
      • Infection Control; hand hygiene, performing sterile procedure.
      • Care of the Surgical Patient; patient identification.
      • Legal Implications in Nursing Practice; prescriber’s orders

Pre-briefing:

Luke Yantha is a 21-year-old male who had knee surgery two weeks ago (Arthroscopic right anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with hamstring graft).  The physician has ordered the staples to be removed and to apply steri-strips. Students will follow aseptic techniques.

Scenario time limit:

20 minutes

Scenario debriefing time limit:

20 Minutes
