What Are We Doing Here?

An e-Book of One’s Own

An e-book of one’s own is a simplified version of a learning practice called “Domain of One’s Own” which was in turn inspired by Virginia Woolf’s book “A Room of One’s Own”. Woolf’s book had the central premise that without the time, space and resources to write, a woman cannot engage in free expression. We believe the same holds true for any student. One of the difficulties of a Domain of One’s Own (DoOO) is the high bar for digital literacy one must have to get started. Whereas DoOO is like being given a piece of land in the middle of the forest to clear and build on yourself, an e-book of one’s own, is more like Woolf’s original intent. The room is already built. It’s warm and cozy. Move in and start freely expressing yourself. Hence this template to simplify things.

This is a template for you to use to document the products of your learning as you progress through your program. By year and by course, you can add essays, videos, audio recordings, images (or a mix!) of any work you do that you want to showcase. Add your assignments and make reflections on your learning experience for each course.

Why?

This practice will help you centre yourself in your learning. Rather than just submitting an assignment to a course dropbox and forgetting about it, you can put that assignment here, with all the others. We believe it will lead you to make more and deeper connections across your courses and over the years of your program. Plus you will get to leave here with the book of your learning journey! It will help you learn more deeply AND THEN help you kick off the career following your time here. This thing is doing double duty.
