Enhancing Question and Answer Sections
Why do we need to enhance Question & Answer sections in Pressbooks?
- Content imported from different systems will have varying methods of displaying questions & answers
- Standardizing questions & answers throughout the book provides a better user experience
- Optimizing the display of answers/solutions using footnotes/endnotes improves the offline/PDF experience
- summary and details tagging only hides the answers for web-users – PDF users will see the answer immediately after the question
- footnotes/endnotes create a clickable footnote in web version and a numbered endnote in the PDF export
Process to enhance Question & Answer sections in Pressbooks
- Adjust the footnote style in Pressbooks settings by visiting Appearance > Custom Styles > PDF. Select the option to Display as Chapter endnotes.
- Determine which pages / sections of your book have questions & answers or problems and solutions. Combine separate Problems and related solutions into one page.
- Number or align the problems as ordered lists where possible.
- Add the solution/answer to each question in Pressbooks visual editor immediately after the problem.
- Use the footnote tool to designate the answer/solution as a footnote.
