Welcome! Come in!
Future you will be looking fondly back in time and praising you for finding this resource. Well done, present-day you!
To get the most out of this resource, make sure you scroll all the way down the pages, it’s a scrolling type of design.
Thank you for choosing to try this learning. The purpose of this resource is to provide you with support and guidance for your online learning journey from College and University peers across Ontario. Like all learning, online learning is challenging and requires commitment and motivation from you, the learner! Online asynchronous learning is more flexible, which is probably why you chose it. The advice and empathy in this resource, the shared experiences, and strategies for success are all designed by learners like you (your peers), rather than faculty or administrators. Hopefully, this helps you as you explore this book. Some specific Conestoga College practices and information have been added to the original Liberated Learners resource.
To Get Started – Select the Contents link on the upper left side of this page. You will see a variety of pages and places to explore. You can and should explore any way that suits your style.
What Is This Thing?
Good question. Let’s dig in.
The folks that created this resource were hoping it would help you to become a more confident online learner. It’s about you liberating yourself to be able to squeeze all the learning you need out of any learning situation. You can use a bit of the resource, or a lot of it. Take what you need. This is for you.
The 4 distinct modules that have been identified as the “liberated learner” framework are described below. You can click the little triangle to the left of each category below to see a description of each.
Learner
That’s pretty obvious, right? That’s why this is the opening, fundamental module of the program. In it, you will get help figuring things out in the areas of motivation and engagement, awareness of yourself, academic balance, and academic struggles.
Technologist
As a student, your “technology toolbox” is often filled with tools that you didn’t choose, but you need to know how to use. This module aims to help you not only learn the tools you’re asked to use, but also have some of your own tools and skills at the ready for when you do get the chance to be creative.
Navigator
Every institution, every program, and every course has its own unique pathways (and barriers) to success. This module wants to help you navigate your way through it by focusing on time management, wellness, self-awareness, and accessing the information and services available to you.
Collaborator
Most people will recognize that the world is increasingly connected and collaborative. Let’s face it though, not everyone loves working in groups. This module contains advice that may help you work well with others where you’ll be facing issues of organization, self-advocacy, allyship, and networking in order to make the most of collaborative projects.
Have a look through the slides below (you can click through yourself by selecting the middle-bottom arrows) to see a little more about what you’d be getting yourself into by doing these modules. You can take any path you want through the 4 modules. If you’re not sure where to start, we’d recommend the Learner Module.
