This text was created by the members of the ExCel group of instructors at McMaster University.  ExCel connects instructors representing each of the Faculties across McMaster University who are committed to experiential and community engaged teaching and learning. The 2021-2022 ExCel members who worked on this text include Brent McKnight, Margaret Secord, Nikol Piskuric, Jennie Vengris, Cam Chruchill, Cathy Grise, Karen Balcom (Academic Co-Director for Teaching and Learning, Office of Community Engagement), Kim Dej (ViceProvost, Teaching and Learning) and Jay Carter (Acting Manager, Office of Community Engagement). Lisa Dyce from the Paul R MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Excellence in Teaching formatted the text and created all of the interactive elements. Staff members from the Office of Community Engagement reviewed the text, offered specific advice on scenarios, and created the short videos describing McMaster’s Principles of Community Engagement.

Students in Cathy Grise’s English 3RG3 Winter 2022 crafted the learning objectives for the overall text, and created a structure with suggested core content.  We could not have produced this text without them.

We also built from previous guides and training materials created by Sheila Sammon (past Academic Director of the Office of Community Engagement), Margaret Secord, Cathy Grise, Bri Denicola, and others. These resources can be found in the Community Engaged Education Resources Section of McMaster’s Office of Community Engagement website.
