  1. We have provided political cartoons here to give you a sense of how Macdonald’s performance as Prime Minister was assessed in the 1880s. In what other ways can political cartoons be used to inform our understanding about this period?
  2. In what ways is race being constructed in the political cartoons? Though they were all produced for the same newspaper, do they all share the same message?
  3. How important are Timothy Stanley’s arguments for assessing Macdonald’s legacy today? How influential were they in shaping his critics’ perspectives in the cartoons during the 1880s?
