Chapter 1: Understanding PLAR

1.1 What is PLAR?

PLAR stands for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. It is the process used by the college to assess the knowledge and skills you have gained through work and life experience to determine if your learning-through-experience is eligible for college credit towards the requirements of a college course or program.

imageThe learning to be assessed through PLAR should be current, relevant to the Fanshawe College course/program outcomes, and of a breadth and depth that reflects college-level learning.

imagePLAR uses a variety of tools to help you reflect on, identify, articulate, and, where appropriate, demonstrate your learning.

imageThe official College policy on PLAR is Policy A124: Recognition of Prior Learning, available on the College website via the College Policy Manual A124 Recognition of Prior Learning (fanshawec.ca)

Note: PLAR does not apply when you are seeking credit for courses taken at another college or university. Post-secondary credits can be assessed through the Transfer Credit process.
