Communication with Employers
5 Employer Info Session Prep
Many employers host virtual information sessions to share details about their company and the DT job posting.
Joining the live session gives you a chance to meet the company representatives, make a positive first impression, and show your interest by asking questions during the Q&A.
Steps to prepare
1. Read the Job Posting
Review the job description so you understand the role, required skills, and what the employer is looking for.
2. Research the Company
Explore the company website and their social media. Ensure you know what they do as well as any recent projects or updates.
3. Test Your Tech
Make sure your internet, microphone, and camera are working. Have Zoom/Teams links ready and join a few minutes early.
4. Dress Professionally (have your cameras on)
Even a clean, simple top works. Presenting yourself professionally helps you make a positive impression.
5. Be Ready to Take Notes
Write down key details about the role, tips the employer shares, or anything that could help with your application or interview.
6. Plan to Engage and prepare to ask one thoughtful question
Good questions for an employer info session focus on day-to-day work, company culture, and industry insights.
On the role and daily work
-
- What does a typical day or week look like for someone in this position?
- What are the most immediate projects or challenges?
- What does a successful first 30, 60, or 90 days look like?
On company culture and team
-
- How would you describe the company culture?
- What do you personally enjoy most about working here?
- What kind of people tend to excel at this company or on this team?
- How does the team collaborate and communicate?
-
- How has the industry changed, and how is the company adapting to future trends?
- What are the biggest opportunities or challenges the company sees in the next few years?
- How does this role contribute to the company’s overall goals?
Questions to avoid
-
- Anything about salary, benefits, or time off.
- Anything negative in tone, like “What are the challenges?” etc…
- Anything that demonstrates you are not familiar with the role or company.
