About This Book

Human Resources Management (HRM) plays an integral role in the success of organizations through a strategic approach to recruiting, training and retaining employees, ensuring long-term growth and sustainability. HRM professionals are vital to managing people effectively and must exhibit expertise in all HR competencies.

This Canadian text emphasizes current and relevant topics for HR professionals and aligns with the Human Resources Professional Association’s (HRPA) nine required competencies. HRPA Competency alignments are highlighted throughout the textbook with the following text boxes.

About the Author – Debra Patterson, MscD, BAdEd

Debra PattersonDebra’s background in Human Resources spans 20 years working in leadership, management, and consulting. Her expertise lies in strategic planning that relates to organizational performance, diversity and equity, recruitment and selection, organizational behaviour, training and development, environmental influences (the climate of the organization), international HR, labour relations, and the cultures of companies.  As well, Debra has been a classroom and online professor for 15 years at 5 different Ontario colleges, including Fanshawe College, Georgian, Conestoga, Lambton, and Durham College. Debra holds a Master’s Degree, a degree in Adult Education, diplomas in Business and Human Resources, a Master Online Teacher Certification, and a CHRL designation.

Debra’s philosophy and role in teaching is simple. She acts as a teacher, guide, and facilitator. She works with students, as individuals and teams, to be the best they can be, and helps to ensure their success.  Debra has written two other open textbooks in Human Resources.

This Human Resources Management textbook invites students to engage with a learning resource beyond what most texts offer.  Her content writing skills are woven together with her teaching skills, and practical experience to create a unique instructional resource.
