12.4 Code of Ethics

HRPA has a set of standards (Code of Ethics) for all its members.  These are expectations of Human Resources Specialists, and they are expected to be in compliance. The Code of Ethics is the foundation of six core values that all Human Resources Specialists (registered) must demonstrate in human resources roles.

The rationale for the Code of Ethics is that Human Resources Specialists experience ethical situations regularly in their jobs.  HRPA (n.d.) has identified ethical values to be upheld by all its members, which are listed below.

HRPA Code of Ethics Values

Professionalism: design and implement policy and procedures, processes and practices that assist in organizing and managing its employees.  HR Specialists must uphold high personal standards of their own behaviours, and are accountable to the best interests of employees and to the public.

Trustworthiness:  HR Specialists ensure truthfulness, high standards and transparency.

Respect: HR Specialists respect the rights and needs of others; treat everyone with dignity.

Competence: HR Specialists provide the highest quality of service and advice to all employees through their skills, knowledge and their own professional values.  They are committed to lifelong learning and teaching others.

Equity and Fairness:  HR Specialists ensure everyone is treated equally and fairly; and that their place of employment is inclusive.

Best Interest of Others:  HR Specialists act on behalf of all they serve professionally; and are committed to the best interests of everyone they serve.
