1.6 Classroom and Online (Remote) Invigilation Services

Please note: Classroom invigilation services are offered at the London Campus of Fanshawe College for the following schools:

  • School of Information Technology
  • School of Building Technology
  • School of Applied Science

Classroom Invigilation

Students writing testsInvigilation staff at Fanshawe are available case-by-case to support faculty in the classroom (IT, Building Technology, and Applied Science only) with proctoring. The faculty of record for the course must get their Associate Dean’s approval before requesting invigilation assistance. Once granted, the faculty member will fill out the Invigilator Request Form and await communication from the Test Centre.

Five business days are required to process requests during the academic term. Ten business days are required to process requests for final exams.

Typically, classroom invigilation is for sessions that involve many students writing the same exam and may include multiple room locations simultaneously.

Before the exam, faculty communicate with invigilators through the Test Centre about the exam(s) in advance about specifics, such as attendance recording, permitted materials, location details and incident reporting protocols.

Faculty should prepare and provide invigilation staff with exam booklets, instructions, formula sheets, and other test materials.

FanshaweOnline (FOL)

All Fanshawe faculty have access to College-approved educational technologies that support student learning.

Before engaging with educational technologies, review Policy A115: Online Learning and Educational Technology, which supports faculty in developing and delivering high-quality programs and courses, and students’ security and privacy rights.

FanshaweOnline (FOL) is the College’s learning management system (LMS) used to host and edit online learning resources. Approved educational technologies are available in FOL, allowing faculty to create custom content and knowledge assessment experiences for courses and users. Visit Getting Started for basic orientation and tasks, and visit the text-based guides or video-based guides to learn more about FOL.

Educational technologies are rapidly evolving to meet the needs of educators and students. Before using a technology not available through FOL, a professor must:

  1. Obtain approval from their academic manager to use the tech.
  2. Work with their educational support technologist to determine whether the technology can be used in accordance with Section 3.2 of Standard 2 in Policy A115.
  3. Submit an Ed Tech Request to determine funding availability.

Before using any educational technology for instructional purposes, introduce your students to the tool and provide them with:

  1. a link to that technology’s Privacy and Terms of Service
  2. alternative ways to participate if a student wants to opt out of using the tool

Online (Remote) Invigilation

Sumeet sitting at a computerRespondus Lockdown Browser (LDB) and Monitor are commonly used for online student assessments and are available through FanshaweOnline (FOL). Respondus LDB is software that students download and launch to prevent access to other applications during an assessment. Respondus Monitor is a remote proctoring software that monitors a student during an online assessment. For help using Respondus Monitor, refer to the Help Guide within FOL or contact your educational support technologist at your school/faculty.

Students who wish to opt out of Respondus Monitor must communicate this request to the professor at least five full business days prior to the evaluation – weekends and holidays do not count as business days. Your professor will arrange a date and time to write the assessment on a college-issued and monitored device under the supervision of Test Centre staff. Test Centre staff will send a scheduling confirmation email to the student and faculty member to verify the successful booking.

Refer to the QRG: Online Testing and Virtual Proctoring section for additional help with online proctoring.

Test Formats and Software

The Test Centre offers assessment services for both online (FOL) and paper-based tests. Faculty requiring specific software for course assessments and students wishing to use the facility are encouraged to contact the Test Centre to ensure installation and computer availability. See the Test Centre Software Availability section for a list of software available at the Test Centre.
