1.5 Accommodated Student Testing
Students with accommodations at Fanshawe can write their tests and exams at a testing site. They are encouraged to schedule their exams by using the test booking feature found within their FanshaweOnline (FOL) student portal.
Once an appointment is scheduled, faculty are notified and can review and update the booking parameters, input test guideline information, and upload any necessary testing materials. All of these can be done within the faculty members’ FOL portal.
The Test Centre is responsible for facilitating accommodated tests overall, which includes setting up exam spaces, printing testing materials, conducting comprehensive invigilation, and returning completed tests to faculty.
FOL Process for Students, Faculty and Test Centre
Faculty
Review/edit test parameters and upload materials through FOL.
*Test coversheets are not required for scheduled accommodated tests. The Clockwork scheduling system generates these.
Before sharing a student’s test with the Test Centre, verify that:
- The accommodations are specific to the student writing the assessment.
- The assessment details match the details on the Test Centre cover sheet.
Set up FOL-based quizzes for students with accommodations
- Verify the quiz’s password. Do not change the password after submitting the Test Centre cover sheet. Note: The Special Access function cannot be used to assign a different password for the student.
- Align the quiz’s Special Access settings with the accommodations. It’s important to ensure the assessment matches each student’s needs.
- Review quiz availability dates and conditions. Use the Special Access feature to modify dates.
- Review quiz time limits. Use Special Access to modify time limit options.
- Determine if Respondus LockDown browser is required. The Test Centre is a proctored environment, so LDB may not be necessary. Use the Special Access feature to disable LDB or verify in the LDB settings that the assessment can be written in a proctored environment without a webcam.
- Disable Respondus Monitor. Test Centre and college lab computers are not equipped with web cameras.
- Review attempts and completion. Use the Special Access feature to override the allowed attempts.
- Adjust IP restrictions. If you are using IP restrictions, adjust the IP range to include IP addresses in the Test Centre. Contact the IT Service Desk for information on IP Address Ranges.

Figure 5: Override time limit behaviour options when the time limit expires.
Special Access: LockDown Browser
Use Not required to take this quiz to allow specific students to complete the quiz without the LockDown Browser.
This may be appropriate for students writing in the Test Centre (which is proctored) who are using assistive technology (e.g., Screen Readers, Text-to-Speech, Kurzweil, Read&Write).
While Respondus supports some assistive technology, it modifies how it is accessed and used during a test.
Changing the functionality of assistive technology adds complexity that non-assistive technology users are not subject to. The use of LockDown Browser in this scenario is at your discretion.
To remove the requirement of using Lockdown Browser, select the Not required to take the quiz checkbox.
Special Access: Respondus Monitor
Students writing in a college Lab or the Test Centre do not have access to a webcam unless they are using their own device with a built-in webcam.
If the entire class is writing on college lab computers, do not enable Respondus Monitor.
When a quiz requires Respondus LockDown Browser + Webcam and a student is writing in the Test Centre or on a college lab computer, you have two options:
- Remove the requirement of using LockDown Browser.
- In Respondus Settings, set a password and select Allow this exam to additionally be delivered in a proctored lab.
To allow this exam to additionally be delivered in a proctored lab:
- Access your FanshaweOnline course and select Quizzes from the Evaluations dropdown in the navigation bar.
- Select the LockDown Browser link.
- Select the specific quiz’s’ Context menu link.
- Select Settings.
- Locate and Respondus Monitor Section and expand Advanced Settings.
- To give students the option to either take the exam with a webcam or in a proctored testing lab, select Either Respondus Monitor or a proctored lab can be used to take this exam.
