86 Participatory Audience

Participatory audiences promotes audiences to have the power and freedom to actively do activities that are relative to the content but in their own way.

Chris Kelty’s seven dimensions of participation greatly defines the nature of participatory culture.

{as audiences, they tend to consume. They become users (prosumer) when their interactions affect authorities, public or any jurisdiction.}

Prosumer- mainly consuming content as part of an audience

Prouser- mainly interacting with the content that creates opportunities for engagement

As mentioned in our previous lecture. The drink prime has been recently declining but still gains popularity amongst the content they make, and Prof Derek argues that the youtubers common strategic use of the YouTube algorithm with their other related content was what kept the prime videos on par with others.

Examples show when Paul makes question and answer videos. KSI as well, making reading and commenting videos on fan reddit posts which included some relativity about the prime drink.

Viewers who interact with youtubers often feel a sense of community. YouTube is a platform that serves to promote participatory culture by subscribing to their channel.

Self-disclosure in a content sense involves youtubers sharing their personal life to viewers. This creates a sense of closeness and connection between the content creator and their audience.

Henry Jenkins argues that sites such as YouTube fall short of his original concepts for a number of reasons. Specifically the emphasis of individual self-expression rather than a collective understanding of cultural production.

A lot of participation also starts as an audience but turns to a public.
