This class is meant to draw students’ attention to Canada’s state violence against Black Canadians as well as the essentialist ideals/ archetypes that have come to define them. The aim of this unit is to see the way Black bodies are defined, surveilled and policed by institutions, and the different forms of state violence that are enacted upon them. An intersectional lens will be used to understand the erasure of Black women and gender non-conforming experiences in broader conversations of state violence.

On Tuesdayyou will read two chapters from Maynard’s Policing Black Lives, in addition to two articles highlighting the ways in which Black bodies are surveilled and criminalized. You will also listen to a podcast with Dr. Rai Reece who discusses misogynoir and the policing of black bodies in Canada.

On Thursday, we will come together to discuss your own encounters and/or relationship with the police. We will use an intersectional lens to explore the experiences of Black gender non-conforming people, and the adultification bias.
