Topic: Policing Black Lives Ch. 1

This is a media-heavy week, in which we will focus on the telling and showing of real lived experiences of Black people in Canada, and how Canadian historians tried to erase their stories.

On Tuesday, you will listen to two podcasts, watch three videos, and complete four readings – one of which is a poem. This seems like a lot, but the videos are all under 6 minutes, the readings are manageable, and you can listen to the podcasts from your couch or while you’re out for a walk.

Today is all about taking in these stories, remembering these people, and equipping yourself with the historical knowledge necessary to fight current manifestations of racism.

On Thursday, we will come together to have a discussion about the ‘Black commodity’. In preparation, you will be expected to listen to three mini podcast episodes (5-8 minutes each), read one article, and explore an historical archive of Black veterans’ stories. These materials will provide the context for us to discuss how Black bodies and Black cultures have been (and continue to be) commodified in Canada.
