• This episode features Teajai Travis a Windsor-based artist and educator in conversation with Jemimah Amos, EBAAR Curricular Consultant. Teajai reflects on how his upbringing in one of Windsor’s public housing communities and unwavering family support have shaped his work and commitment to serve his community. He discusses his work, Born Enslaved: A Freedom Story, a study of his Ancestors lives during chattel slavery in the Southern United States of America, and their contribution to the Underground Railroad. The work explores his Ancestors heroic journey from slavery to freedom. Guided by “the infinite light of the spirit of his Ancestors” and their legacy, Teajai work celebrates intergenerational Black resistance and resilience. In this episode we are treated to a sample of the spoken word and abstract rhythmic sound of Teajai’s art. He discusses the transformative power of art to convey and to share the complexities of Black struggle and triumph. He reflects on “the profound generosity of art” for healing and coping with racial trauma and pain; how art can be a lifeline to connect to and advance the struggle for racial justice. And finally, the profound importance of self-love and self-care–walking, breathing, and building–for a brighter, sustainable, and equitable tomorrow.
