12 Step 2: Introductory class-wide session

The introductory session is the initial synchronous gathering where the entire group of students, from both institutions, will have a chance to meet each other as well as the instructors. This session should allow for:

a. Instructional team introductions (e.g., instructors, teaching assistants, support personnel such as student and administrative coordinators)

b. Details of the Virtual Exchange, including timelines, assessments, and expectation

c. Student introductions, which include fun ice breaker activities. It would be worthwhile to use this opportunity to have a sense of who the students are in the space and what their expectations are of the Virtual Exchange.

i. Consider using a combination of large and small group activities. For example, you might facilitate an activity on linguistic/cultural sensitivity or simply ask students what they know about the country in which their partner institution is situated. This can first be done as a large group before sending students into smaller breakout rooms.

ii. Some cultures may have differences in work style. For instance, some cultures prefer a more relationship-oriented approach to work whereas others might prefer a more task-oriented approach. Bringing this possible difference to the awareness of the students may enable students to discuss group expectations in a culturally sensitive manner.

d. Students assigned to project groups, possibly including group formation activity (in this or a subsequent session).

If there are students who cannot attend, it will be important to provide opportunities for individuals to participate asynchronously. This may include making recordings, encouraging use of the shared LMS or communications platform, and the integration of other asynchronous technologies and applications, such as Microsoft’s Flip.
