Teaching Portfolio Assessment (for Chairs, Peers, and Reviewers)

Just as teaching portfolios can be created to serve different purposes, the review of a portfolio may happen in a variety of contexts. Summative reviews are commonly part of formal processes such as tenure, permanence, or promotion. In contrast, formative reviews may be built into a department- or Faculty-wide peer evaluation initiative or arranged ad hoc between McMaster colleagues for developmental purposes. As Chapter VI: Refining Your Portfolio: Feedback, Resources, and Policy suggests a formative peer review process, this Chapter focuses on the experience of Chairs and similar roles who are supporting faculty with creating teaching portfolios for tenure, permanence, and promotion.
