Understanding the Effects of Psychological Safety

We now know what Psychological Safety is, but what are its effects? Psychological safety can have wide ranging and complex effects on the wellbeing of employees in the workplace. This, in turn, can affect every element of an employee’s life. For this reason, it is important to understand what a vital role a psychologically safe work environment plays in inclusive and safe environments for all employees. Let’s learn more about these effects now!

 

The Effects of Psychological safety on Employee Wellbeing

Research has shown that Psychological Safety is positively related to employee well-being. In fact, Psychological Safety along with meaningfulness, and empowerment are significant predictors of creativity and thoughtful risk-taking. The feeling of being able to express oneself without fear of negative consequences can reduce stress and burnout, and enhance employee well-being.

Employee perception of fair treatment and Psychological Safety can trigger positivity at work, leading to employees’ identification with the organization and their psychological well-being. In a study on leadership, it was found that servant leadership that prioritizes the needs of employees and focuses on their growth and well-being positively affects Psychological Safety. This type of leadership has also been found to be endorsed by Indigenous employees with a strong affiliation to their heritage culture.

 

Psychological Safety can improve:

  • Team dynamics
  • Organizational culture
  • Overall employee performance.

With reduced stress and anxiety, Psychological Safety can also reduce the risk of health issues such as:

  • Disease
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Depression
