Gravitational Lensing

Data Analysis

  1. Show an image of the strong gravitational lensing, and show calculations of the lens ‘mass’ for different positions of the lens. Fit your mass measurements as a function of the distance ratio from Equation (6). Is your mass measurement constant as a function of the distance variable?
  2. Show the image of the weak gravitational lensing after you’ve adjusted it in ImageJ. Show your plot of ellipticity vs radius from the center of the lens and your fit using Equation (13). Calculate the mass that is emulated by the lens using Equation (6).
  3. Compare your mass measurements via weak and strong lensing.  Do they agree with each other and with the expected mass of the lens.
