Quantum Analogs
Objective
Students will use standing waves in a tube to study the analogy between sound waves and probability distributions for a quantum particle in a box. Iris’s are added at periodic intervals to emulate a onedimensional crystal lattice. Students will determine the dispersion relation of the wave in various apparatus arrangements and explore resonances in the Brillouin zones. The TeachSpin manual for this experiment may be a helpful reference, which can be downloaded here.
