Introduction To Binary Numbers and Boolean Logic
This section discusses the basics of how values are stored and manipulated in a digital computer. The main topic is binary numbers, and how arithmetic and Boolean logic is performed on these binary representations. Therefore, the section will discuss the fundamentals of how computers work.
This binary code itself is pertinent for the digital humanities. The binary digits (also called bits), 0 and 1, can be understood as characters, and not just numbers. In this way, the binary code becomes text, instead of a matter of arithmetic (Brügger, 2016).
