Major Essay: The Motivation to Act
I found this course quite challenging. The readings were not necessarily hard, but they were heavy. They asked you each week to challenge the way you understood the world, and then in seminar we were asked to discuss which theorist’s perspective we found most persuading. The most challenging part of this course was trying to convey my perspective in a compelling manner. Each student came from a different background, and very specific examples, which I did not have a frame of reference for, would often be used to rebut arguments. This made conversations difficult to follow at the time. However, upon reflection, the discussions within this course were very fruitful. I don’t think that this course necessarily challenged my worldview, but I did improve my ability to argue for my perspectives. I also found the structure of the assignments challenging. There were two group projects (due for me two weeks in a row), and then a major research project which I struggled to find my footing for. I really like the essay that I produeced for this course, but it took many hours to get there.
